Have been editing together various promos and trailers for MI High as well as some stuff for an experimental game Desert Racers.

The promo stuff I exported an aaf ( without the media embedded) and took it over to VT16 on the 2nd floor TVC to give a 30sec promo to someone who was putting together a video loop for CBBC extra. First up the premiere pro threw out error messages as it obviously couldn’t encode some of the video (cross zooms) and sound mixes that The AVID over there refused to relink the media and only explaining the history to the editor, he reckoned that it was something to do with the way that the AVID was joined up to the unity. I went back to my desk and exported a .mov which I then saved in a shared area and was picked up and put into the loop. Strikes me that we will always have these kind of teething problems when working between different systems.

The scratch disk problem seems a bit odd and I suspect is to do with the BBC desktop. When a new project is started ,whichever drive is selected as the scratch disk , premiere says that it can’t write to that disk but if you just continue the selected drive does act as a scratch disk with no problems, so this has just become a slight irritant.

I followed the video that I posted before so that I can digitise on a drive connected to the AVID on the 11th floor and export aaf files that Premiere pro can just reference the MXF files. This process works well but all the footage comes into premiere pro at the wrong aspect ratio ( so the footage needs to be interpretted to 16:9 (1.409). Apart from that everything going swimmingly well.

Ran into Iona Walters this morning (who currently has adobe premiere pro) set up on her machine and is very competent will most technical matters. I told her about the scratch disk problem and she informed me that windows has a problem with the length of file names generated by the Adobe suite hence the error massages and that it was better to place the scratch disks on an external drive. Currently booking some digitising time to release the software in anger.

As with nearly every installation I’ve had in my time with the BBC there are always little problems that are thrown up. John Hughes came back and installed the updates using administrator rights so the software is up to date. He suggested that it may possible to get me administrator rights so I can do the updates myself otherwise I am going to have to log a call and get someone to do this update everytime a patch/ fix or update is released.

The other odd thing is that when I start premiere pro project it asks me where I want the scratch disks to be. I created a folder on the C drive which it then told me it didn’t have access to but when I started working it seemed to be storing and writing stuff to that location anyway.

Someone on my development team had heard I’d had the suite installed. They had a .mov that needed to be converted to a wmv file for distribution and to be used in a pitch they are giving. Imported, the file, cropped and exported via the encoder tool job done in 15mins, size of file 37MB.

Premiere keeps throwing up a message that it wants to install additional codecs but when installation starts they always drop out. Suspect it might be an administrator rights’ thing…Contacting John Hughes now!

John Hughes is here and installing CS4 which is going to take 2 hours to install. In the meantime I’m watching this

In order to work out how I can use the avid suites and digibeta machine on the 11th floor to ingest my rushes and then without redigitising, import them into premiere pro.
